The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) recently conducted research revealing that local steel fabricators and manufacturers are facing significant challenges due to being undercut by cheaper imports. According to an ASI survey in July 2024, 86% of steel fabricators and manufacturers reported reduced profit margins, with imported steel being offered at 15% to 50% lower than the cheapest local options. This situation is especially affecting East Coast fabrication businesses, particularly those involved in the portal frame market for structural steel.
